Year: 2024
Client: North Ayrshire Council
Main Contractor: Van Oord/JT Mackley

Due to ongoing flooding concerns, North Ayrshire Council identified the need for a coastal defence scheme in Millport, on the Isle of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde. The primary goal of this project is to protect Millport’s infrastructure, residents, and the environment from flooding caused by severe weather events and rising sea levels.
North Ayrshire Council employed Royal Haskoning DHV to perform a preliminary design for the scheme. Van Oord were appointed as primary contractor with their subsidiary JT Mackley taking on the onshore works.

Design started in January 2023 with production of precast units starting in June the same year. MCP had to develop a completely bespoke concrete mix design using a brand new sand to meet the strict specifications laid out by the client.
In total, over 950 precast concrete units were delivered to site totalling over 3000 tonnes. The smallest units weighed several hundred kilos whilst the largest were in excess of 11 tonnes, highlighting the vast range of precast involved. As they were in a public realm, setting the finish was key. Each unit was etched after casting to provide the desired exposed finish.
Over 150 unit types were manufactured highlighting the complex nature of this project. Many elements required a single, one-off mould to facilitate casting. Special units were designed and manufactured to allow wheelchair users to take advantage of the new street furniture.
The units manufactured included seawalls, stepped revetments, street furniture, seating units, kerbs and a completely bespoke shelter. Many of the units had complex angles and radii, which presented challenges for both our design team and our mould manufacturers.
Install was finished in 2024 with the scheme being received positively by the local community
